Overview

GTR Badges came into existence to meet a customer need. Event planners needed to be able to take the complex task of badge design and printing into their own hands. To give them that independence, this product would have to simplify several complex processes and 5 different pieces of equipment, and consolidate them into one easy to use platform.

My Role

As the lead product designer, I was tasked with learning about the badge printing process. I documented the entire user journey starting from registration 3 months before the event, to the moment on event day when a colorful badge pops out of the printer with the attendee’s name on it.

By combining a number of older legacy products and working closely with the developers and product manager, I turned this user journey into wireframes and high fidelity prototypes. Some features already existed in the code and solely needed a UI improvement, whereas other features needed to be built from scratch.

GTR Badges consists of 3 separate modules:

1. Badge Builder

A web based image editor for planners to customize their event’s badges. Badge data (name, company etc.) are easily imported from a number of sources, leaving the planner with only the fun task of designing a custom badge.

2. Check-in Builder

A simple page editor that allows planners to tailor the check-in process. Check-in usually happens with an attendee walking up an ipad kiosk, looking up their name, and printing out their own badge. This step by step screen would need to be customizable for whatever the event’s branding required.

3. Desktop App

A separate desktop app designed for on-site printing logistics only for the day of the event. Critically, this would connect to it’s own WiFi network, separate from the Event Venue’s. This would be used to handle the on-the-spot setup that can’t be planned weeks in advance, such as mapping print stations and kiosks, and editing badges on the fly.
